Magma, 2024
An experimental lamp made from waste with a volcanic glow.
Designed and made in London.

Like the iconic Lava lamp of the 70s, our obsession with natural fluid forms and soft, warm glows are finally recreated using cutting edge technology and responsible materials.
Magma is a modular lamp, built from sustainable materials. By combining interchangable layered diffusers with dimmable control, the lamp has a vast array of light temperatures and intensities.
Magma comes in four variants.
Each reflects the different textures and temperatures of volcano flow, varying from the cool ‘ash’ to the warm ‘lava’.
Materials
Magma is constructed from interchangeable parts, creating 4 variants that are easily switched between, without tools.
The diffusers are 3D printed, using a biopolymer recycled from food packaging with up to 98% recycled content (depending on the variant).
The lamp base is cast in a proprietary reduced-carbon concrete, which uses low-carbon cement replacements and waste material from construction work as aggregates.
This is supplemented by a natural cork pad to prevent scratching.

Inspiration
Its design is inspired by the two main materials ejected during volcanic eruptions - the illuminating, flowing molten rock and the rough, cooled ash-covered rock. Magma attempts to bring these natural, rare forms, colours, textures, into our homes using man-made and common materials.

Magma generates a ripping, flowing warm light source that looks different from all angles, with an opaque, rough cast base using techniques that are sustainable and accessible.
